* Wheat and rye are only problems on the low FODMAP diet when consumed in relatively large amounts (e.g. breads, crackers, cereals, pasta). Where wheat is an ingredient only in small amounts (e.g. breadcrumb coating on schnitzel or cookie pieces in cookies and cream ice cream) it is generally not a problem. It is not necessary for those on the low FODMAP diet to be on a gluten free diet although bread, cracker, cereal and pasta products that are gluten free are wheat free and thus acceptable substitutes. Some breads which are not gluten free (e.g. wheat free oat breads) are suitable for the FODMAP diet.
